Leibstadt

The Leibstadt NPP is located on the Swiss side of the Rhine river, close to the border with Germany and the mouth of the river Aare at Koblenz (Switzerland) and Waldshut (Germany).

The plant is a boiling water reactor type BWR-6 of the American company General Electric and is cooled by a cooling tower. It generates around 9.5 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity a year – around one-sixth of the country’s electricity needs.

Leibstadt has an unlimited operating licence. There are seven partners in the company Kernkraftwerk Leibstadt AG that operates the plant:

  • AEW Energie AG (5.4%)
  • Alpiq AG (27.4%)
